Practice With Pronouns
Pronouns take the place of nouns. They can make our sentences sound more natural and make our writing more interesting. Look at the following sentences:
Kathy made a cake for Kathy's party. Kathy's friends liked Kathy's chocolate cake.
Is that how anyone talks or writes? Of course not! You would probably say:
Kathy made a cake for her party. Her friends liked her chocolate cake.
Change at least one of the nouns in each sentence below to pronouns:
1. Amber climbed the tree in her neighbor's yard.
2. Bob jumped in the lake to get his turtle.
3. Callie ate mashed potatoes with chocolate sauce.
4. Did the dog chase the cat into the doghouse?
5. How many grandmothers came to the party last week to see the pictures?
Now change all the pronouns to nouns in these sentences. You may need to add some words to make it work. (Example: He saw it on television. Change to: He saw the monster on television.)
1. She found it on her roof.
2. They watched it racing past the library.
3. We climbed on its back and rode to the park.
4. It was too high up for him to reach.
5. Joshua made faces at it until it went away.
Draw pictures of five items or people. Underneath each picture, write a pronoun that could be used for this picture. Then write a noun that could be used for the picture.
