Nouns are words that names something: a person, a place, a thing or an idea. Boy is a noun. It tells you what kind of person is out there playing baseball right now. Alexander is a noun. It tells you the name of the boy you are watching on the field. Boy is a common noun, because it is very general. Alexander is a proper noun. It tells you the actual name of the boy.
